Our Mission

Loving God and Loving People.

Who We Are

Charity United Methodist Church is nestled in the heart of the beautiful city of Virginia Beach, VA, in the charming town of Pungo, renowned for its celebrated Strawberry Festival and warm, welcoming spirit. As one of the earliest Methodist churches in Virginia, our rich history spans over 235 years, during which Charity Church has remained a beacon of faith, hope, and love in our community.

From our humble beginnings to today, we have stood steadfast in our mission to make disciples for the transformation of the world. Rooted in the Wesleyan tradition, we are a vibrant Christian community committed to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ through worship, fellowship, and service. Our doors are open to all, and we strive to embody the love of Christ in everything we do.

Our congregation reflects God’s family, with a healthy balance of children, youth, families, and retired saints who inspire us with their wisdom, energy, and commitment to loving God and one another. We cherish the intergenerational connections that make our church a family and nurture every person’s faith journey through opportunities for spiritual growth, community engagement, and acts of kindness.

At Charity UMC, we are deeply engaged in serving both our local and global communities. From our vibrant worship services on Sunday, growing family ministries including youth and children to our food bank and other outreach programs and cherished traditions, we are dedicated to being the hands and feet of Christ in the world. We invite you to join us in worship, fellowship, and service as we continue to grow in faith together, celebrating God's goodness and grace.

Our Beliefs

Jesus is the Son of God, fully divine and fully human, who came into the world to reveal God's love and bring salvation to all. As the Christ, or Messiah, he is God’s Anointed One, fulfilling the ancient hope of a Savior. Jesus is also our Lord, calling us to follow him with devoted allegiance, and our Savior, reconciling us with God through his sacrifice on the cross and resurrection. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, showing us how to live as God's people and offering the gift of eternal life.

The United Methodist Church believes in one God, revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We trust in Jesus Christ as our Savior, whose life, death, and resurrection bring salvation by grace through faith. Rooted in scripture and guided by tradition, reason, and experience, we affirm the Bible as the foundation of our faith. We celebrate two sacraments—Baptism and Holy Communion—and live out our faith through worship, service, and love for all people, striving for justice and peace in the world. With open hearts, open minds, and open doors, we welcome everyone to experience God’s grace.

Grace, in the United Methodist Church, is God’s unconditional help and love freely given to all. It works in three ways: Prevenient Grace, which draws us to God; Justifying Grace, which reconciles us to God through faith in Jesus; and Sanctifying Grace, which helps us grow in holiness and love throughout our lives.
